Instrumental Music Glossary

Dine Out Event – A fundraising opportunity for our group. Held once a month (September – May) at a local eatery where a percentage of sales goes directly back to our program.

Disneyland – A performing group has been selected by Disney through an audition process to perform as part of our State Standards inside one of the two Disney parks. Volunteers needed on bus/at park and to tow the YLMS Music trailer.

District Area Band/Orchestra Festivals – An exciting evening of musical development! The area night is a wonderful way to showcase the growth musically from elementary to high school.

District Band Pageant – Showcases the PYLUSD’s marching bands from all high schools and all middle schools (over 2000 musicians)! This awesome event is at Bradford Stadium at Valencia High School. Volunteers needed to help students in/out of marching uniforms at YLMS, to tow YLMS Music trailer, and chaperones on bus and on field at festival. Tickets purchased in music room to benefit our program – tickets sold at event but money distributed to all PYLUSD schools.

Early Morning Rehearsal (EMR) – An opportunity for the Performing Band and Percussion classes to play together — typically in the week or so before a scheduled performance.

8th Grade Band and Orchestra Rehearsals – Each high school hosts a special rehearsal event for the 8th graders to preview what high school music is all about.

End of the Year Party – All classes attend to celebrate the conclusion of the school year. Pizza and other refreshments served. Volunteers are needed for some food donation, setup/cleanup, and to serve food.

Faculty/Staff Breakfast – A morning event each year to say thank you to the faculty and staff at YLMS for their support of our music program. Held in the MPR at Lasorda Fieldhouse. Volunteers needed for food donation, setup/cleanup, and food service.

Fundraising – Fundraising is a necessity for our program. It takes a lot of resources to run a quality music program like ours and we receive no outside funding. As a non-profit organization, the YLMS Instrumental Music Booster Club depends on the generosity of donors to help cover our operating costs. We thank you in advance for any support you can provide. The YLMS-IMBC is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Your contribution may be deductible for income tax purposes.

Hero Luncheon – The boosters host a pizza party for the hero sections for all music classes. Hero instruments are the low brass (trombone, tuba), low woodwinds (bass clarinet, bari sax) and low strings (cello, bass). Typically done twice a year on a Wednesday since all students have the same lunch period that day. Volunteers needed for pizza pickup and serving.

Holiday Concert – An evening of musical performances by all students in the Instrumental Music program at YLMS. Held at the LaSorda Fieldhouse. Volunteers needed on day before concert for setup. Recommended admission donation $5 per person the night of the performance.

Holiday Elementary Concerts – We travel to Lakeview, Linda Vista, Mabel Paine, and Rose Drive Elementary schools to perform and to showcase our wonderful music program here at YLMS. Many of the kids viewing the performance have been learning a musical instrument for a few months – gives them something to look forward to on their musical journey. At conclusion of tour there is a pizza lunch at Hurless Barton. Volunteers are needed for transportation of instruments between schools and to assist with pickup and serving of lunch.

Instrumental Music Group Pictures – Picture days for YLMS Instrumental Music! Professional photographers take group photos in Hurless Barton park. For Performing Band and Advanced Orchestra ONLY – individual and buddy photos are available for purchase as well. Information packets will be sent home. For Intermediate Band and Intermediate Orchestra – the group picture taken is for the yearbook. Unfortunately, no photographs for purchase. Many volunteers needed all days to help Performing Band in and out of uniforms and helping to tie ties for Advanced Orchestra and both Intermediate Band and Orchestra.

Jazz Festival – As part of our State standards, the Jazz 1 class performs and is adjudicated by some of the finest Southern California jazz musicians. The festival is usually held at either Esperanza High School or South Hills High School in West Covina.

Letter Writing Campaign – Our fall fundraiser. We request each student bring in 5 to 7 pre-addressed stamped envelopes to send to some family and friends. The letter we send explains our fundraising needs and goal. We will gladly accept donations of any size.

Little Big Jazz Concert – An idea formed many years ago by retired music teacher Rich Watson. The jazz concert showcases both Tuffree M.S. and YLMS jazz programs. Each jazz group will also have the opportunity to work with a Southern California pro jazz musician.

Mandatory Sectionals – In preparation for the SCSBOA Festivals we have professional musicians come to YLMS to work with each section – trumpets, clarinets, violins, cellos, etc.

  • Advanced Orchestra and Performing Band

Music in The Parks – This is a big fundraiser for our group! Our children do not perform. Music in The Parks is a company that contracts with us to be a host. We provide a concert facility and personnel to for Instrumental and Vocal groups to be adjudicated. High school and middle schools travel to our venue (Lakeview Elementary) – we set up the MPR with chairs, risers, and instruments needed for each performance. Typically on a Saturday morning but occasionally on a Friday evening. We need volunteers to help set up, check in groups, guide groups to warm-up area, etc. It would be great if you could volunteer the duration of the event BUT if not even an hour or two helps TREMENDOUSLY. There is some standing around while groups are performing BUT we still need you!

Parent/Booster Meetings – Very important to attend to be up on what is happening in the instrumental music program. Three a year – September, January and May.

Participation Contribution – The Participation Contribution is the amount determined by the boosters we need to receive from each student enrolled in the program to meet our budget requirements.

Pastries in the Park(ing lot) – This annual event is scheduled before school on the Friday before the Placentia Heritage Festival and Parade. It is an opportunity for the Performing Marching Band to have a casual dress rehearsal (they wear their music t-shirts). Please park on Casa Loma as the band will march around the LaSorda Field House parking lot. Parents, family, and friends are encouraged to attend and cheer on our kids (they have been working so hard) – and we eat pastries (donuts, etc) in the parking lot! Our student musicians will have an opportunity to eat after their performance. Volunteers needed for food and setup/cleanup and serving.

Placentia Heritage Festival and Parade – The parade route is on Kraemer – beginning south of Yorba Linda Blvd and ending adjacent to Tri-Cities Park. Click here for street closures. Performing band meets at YLMS to get dressed in marching uniforms and will be bused to beginning parade route. Volunteers needed for helping band get in/out of marching uniforms at YLMS in music room, towing YLMS Music trailer, chaperones on bus and parade route.

Pre-Festival Concert – This is an annual event to prepare Performing Band and Advanced Orchestra for the upcoming Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) festivals. The groups will perform 3 musical selections from a State list. A guest adjudicator will critique their performance and give the audience a perspective of what it may be like inside the classroom.

Promotion Ceremony – Jazz 1 performs at YLMS 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony. Volunteers needed to transport instruments back to YLMS.

Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) Festivals – 3 SCSBOA judges sit on a panel and critique the advanced orchestra and Performing band performance by lending constructive criticism ideas to help further develop our young musicians.

Spring Concert – The year-end finale of musical performances by all students in the instrumental music program at YLMS. Held at LaSorda Fieldhouse. Volunteers needed for setup. Recommended admission donation $5 per person the night of the performance.

Spring Fundraiser – All classes participate. We have typically done See’s Candies. Volunteer needed to run/oversee fundraiser.

YLMS Music Assemblies – Musical performances for the YLMS student body in the morning on a school day. One in December and one in June.
